I was recently given a new responsibility in our ward at church which entails organizing community service events on the Stake level. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, basically that means we're trying to organize a service project that will include 500+ people plus the community.
We have a meeting in a week and I'm supposed to come with loads of ideas. So I thought I'd ask:
What service projects have your Stakes or Wards done that you enjoyed? Or even if you didn't enjoy it, what was it? Do you have any great ideas floating around in your head that you wish a Stake would do? Will you share?
I'd love your ideas! thanks!!

We helped with a yearly pancake breakfast to benefit a community outreach center. Other churches also participate every year- it was nice to coordinate with other churches for one big service.
We also sewed clothing protectors for the adult day school here.
I remember one time going to a park and fixing up the playground. There have been lots of opportunities for cleaning up people's yards, fixing fences, cleaning up trails, etc. Clothing and food drives are common, but not sure how you make that into a one-day stake service project exactly. I seem to recall a stake humanitarian day where there were a few projects we could get involved in, like small stations in the church or something like that. Projects like putting together hygiene kits, school preparedness kits, making blankets for the children's hospital, etc. I'll try to think of some other stuff too.
Contact the local parks department and find out what kind of service they need. Tell that that you'll provide X number of volunteers if they'll coordinate the project (planting plants, spreading mulch, digging holes, etc).
We planted trees in Santa Monica, coordinating with the Park District. They provided the trees of course--and we were just the manual labor to plant them in a short amount of time.
This weekend we are doing some painting at an elementary school--I don't know the details, we are just showing up at the school at 9.
A few years ago we coordinated with the local food bank and panned the entire area going door to door asking for food donations.
All these were done while wearing our yellow "Helping Hands" t-shirts
Community clean up! Find houses where people need help gardening, planting, cleaning, mowing, taking stuff to the dump etc. Assign a few families to each house and they will be whooped into shape in no time. This is a huge calling. Good luck!
