I.....I Quit...I Quit...I Quit Mr. White

Okay, so that didn't last long.  Here's what I realized.  First, I have always HATED it when I have people over for dinner and we serve dessert and they say "Oh, I don't eat sweets."  Pooh on you.  I love to bake, I love to host, I love to serve desserts.  So you just turned your nose up at my favorite thing and all in the name of a diet.  Pooh on you.  (Not really, but still)

So I did great not having sugar for 3 days.  Then I went to an event where we were served dessert.  I didn't want to be rude.  The next day, we went to another event but it was more of a potluck so I didn't feel the need to indulge.  The next two days I did great.  We had someone over for dinner and I DIDN'T make dessert, though Braden served ice cream anyway.  I declined.  Now its been two more days and I'm doing well.

However, I have decided to alter my goal a bit.

1.  I will not purposely make junk food and serve it in my home unless it is a hostess opportunity (like this Saturday with our potluck and ice cream sundae bar).
2.  I will eat sugar if I am served it at someone else's event.
3.  All things in moderation.

One thing I've found is just WANTING to cut back on sugars has really helped me be more concious of what I am eating and where it is coming from.  Like lunch today.  I served yogurt.  Normally yogurt is full of corn syrup and junk, totally negating most of its nutritious benefits.  So I took plain yogurt, added honey, blueberries, raspberries, and marionberries (thanks to sam's club) and made our own mixed berry yogurt.  It was delicious and we all had seconds.  Mmm...

Sorry to disappoint those who have more will power than me and who are joining me in this quest.  I'm sure you can do a better job than me.  I figure if I can be more self-disciplined in between the holiday events and parties coming up, partaking for the sake of graciousness and deliciousness will not be too damaging, right?

Who's With Me?

I've been thinking lately about health and nutrition.  See, I'm getting older.  Sure, I'm not 30 yet.  But I want to be HEALTHY til the day I die.  Since I strongly believe that a lot of our ailments, sicknesses, diseases, cancers, etc. are a result of our highly processed, chemical, fatty diets.  And I don't like it.  Plus, I want to have ENERGY.  And I'd like to not hate what I see when I look in the mirror, knowing I could do something about it.

My dear friend Jill inspired me when she went off refined sugars and white flour.  I was very impressed and thought, I could never do that.  I'm still not sure about the flour part, but I've been feeling that sugar is really a drain on my body right now.  I've had a sweet tooth since getting pregnant with Keara and it hasn't left.  I've caved in to it way too many times...like a few times daily.  I just love cookies, chocolate, brownies, quick breads, etc.  Love.

So I know I need to stop.  I've decided to try going off added sugars for one week, just to see how it goes.  I know I'll go thru serious withdrawal.  But I'm going to try.  Here's my plan:

1.  No added sugars for one week (natrually occuring sugars are fine...like fruits, etc.)
2.  Increase water consumption to 10 8-oz. glasses of water per day
3.  Structured exercise for 45 minutes 3 days in a week

Do you want to try with me?  I know I never really stick to anything without someone doing it with me and since I don't have a Jill or Krista out here, I need someone else to be accountable with.  I'm trying to recruit Braden but its not the same.

Music?

My brother in law introduced me to Pandora.com a couple years ago and I have LOVED it.  If you're unfamiliar, you can create your own radio stations  based on genre, artists, etc.  I have a country station, Disney station, Broadway station, Michael Buble station, etc.  I also have my go-to Christmas station.  And when ever weather starts feeling like it has lately around here, I get in the mood for Christmas music.

The downside of pandora is that you only get 40 hours of free listening per month.  Yeah, I've exceeded that.  Now I'm desperately searching for another way to listen to music.  I like having classical music or showtunes or disney music on while the girls are coloring or doing beads or whatever, and now I have nothing.  I know, I know, use my windows media player.  But that means I need to upload all our music onto our computer.  When our computer crashed and we lost all of that, I just never got around to doing it again.

Braden loves Jango, so I've been trying to build a station on there.  But it is the STUPIDEST site ever.  It takes pandora about 3 songs to figure out exactly what I'm looking for.  Sometimes, it has a hard time.  But here on Jango, I've told it about 50 songs I like...all Christmas songs, mind you.  And yet, I have to skip over 20 songs before it will play one Christmas song.  And the songs it is giving me is a mix of Aretha Franklin, Kiss and Alice Cooper, Metallica, ZZ Topp, Brad Paisley...no rhyme or reason.  Then, its tossing in these born again Christian songs.  Seriously, I'm so sick of getting it to figure out that all I want is CHRISTMAS MUSIC!!

Anyone have a better suggestion?

An Even Better Deal...

Now you can get those restaurant gift certificates for only $2 until Wednesday.  My sister commented that there was nothing in her area.  We thought the same thing but then decided to try places we've never heard of.   You know, try the local fare.  We'll see how it goes, but we figure at least this way we can try it without as much of an investment.

If you want, go to restaurant.com

Quick! A Good Deal Ends Tomorrow! (Sunday)

Hey!  I just wanted to share with you a special deal we were emailed about and actually took advantage of.  My friends told us about restaurant.com a couple years ago and how they got gift certificates to local restaurants for like 70% less than the face value.  They loved it!  I always meant to check it out, but never did.  Our energy company sent us an email about this special restaurant.com is doing which ends tomorrow.  You can get a $25 gift certificate for just $3!

Most national or franchised restaurants aren't included.  But a lot of local ones are, so check it out!  Also, most of them have a $35 minimum purchase at the restaurant plus 18% gratuity.  So you'll end up having to spend about $20 total for your bill if you only bought $35 worth of food.  Still, a good deal!

Taryn Made a Funny

And she didn't even know it.

The other day I offered Taryn a cheese stick for a snack.  Cheese stick a.k.a string cheese.

M: Taryn, do you want a cheese stick?
T: Does it have cheese?
M: Yes.
T: I don't want the cheese.  I just want the stick.

Please Post This On Your Blog

Hi everyone.  Haven't been blogging here much lately.  Sorry about that.

I'm coming tonight in need of a little support.  Braden's cousin passed away last Saturday after battling lyme disease for the last 7 years.  Lyme disease is an inflammatory disease that is originally caused by a tick bite which, if left untreated or treatment is delayed, can lead to joint, heart, and nervous system problems.  But it gets worse than that.  You can read more about it below.

Doctor's believed that she was infected with the disease as a child but it didn't show major symptoms until 7 years ago, meaning the disease was too far spread to cure at that point.  Because many people CAN be cured from it, her insurance stopped covering her treatment 6 years ago!  Can you imagine the weight of not only slowly losing your wife, mother, and sister, but also having the medical expense too?  I can't.

Leigh Case was a mother to three young kids, with the oldest just 18 and the youngest 11.  Her husband is an incredible man and serves as a family counselor in Arizona.  They have endured SO much and are now grieving beyond my comprehension.

I know that after the dust settles,  the reality of the expenses they will have to face will become a burden too heavy to carry.  While they are not asking for donations, they have set up an account in Leigh's honor for those who are seeking ways to try to ease the load.  If you are inclined to donate to charities and could spare a bit for this family, I assure you it will not go unappreciated.  I really can't say much more about it.

If you are so inclined, you can go to any Chase Bank and donate to account #903816270.

If Chase Bank is not available in your area, I'm sure you can contact the bank at (480) 807-5387 or (877)242-7372.

If you could post this on your blog or email it out, I know they could use a lot more than I'm sure we are able to provide.  If you'd like to read her obituary, go to the Arizona Republic.  The funeral is on Saturday with a viewing tomorrow night (Friday) if you're interested.

From Wikipedia "After several months, untreated or inadequately treated patients may go on to develop severe and chronic symptoms that affect many parts of the body, including the brain, nerves, eyes, joints and heart. Myriad disabling symptoms can occur, including permanent paraplegia in the most extreme cases.

Chronic neurologic symptoms occur in up to 5% of untreated patients.  A polyneuropathy that involves shooting pains, numbness, and tingling in the hands or feet may develop. A neurologic syndrome called Lyme encephalopathy is associated with subtle cognitive problems, such as difficulties with concentration and short-term memory. These patients may also experience profound fatigue.  However, other problems such as depression and fibromyalgia are no more common in people who have been infected with Lyme than in the general population. Chronic encephalomyelitis, which may be progressive, can involve cognitive impairment, weakness in the legs, awkward gait, facial palsy, bladder problems, vertigo, and back pain. In rare cases untreated Lyme disease may cause frank psychosis, which has been mis-diagnosed as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Panic attack and anxiety can occur, also delusional behavior, including somatoform delusions, sometimes accompanied by a depersonalization or derealization syndrome, where the person begins to feel detached from themselves or from reality.

Lyme arthritis usually affects the knees.  In a minority of patients arthritis can occur in other joints, including the ankles, elbows, wrist, hips, and shoulders. Pain is often mild or moderate, usually with swelling at the involved joint. Baker's cysts may form and rupture. In some cases joint erosion occurs.

Acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA) is a chronic skin disorder observed primarily in Europe among the elderly.  ACA begins as a reddish-blue patch of discolored skin, often on the backs of the hands or feet. The lesion slowly atrophies over several weeks or months, with the skin becoming first thin and wrinkled and then, if untreated, completely dry and hairless.

Gunny Bag, Part II

I've had bunch of people asking me about Gunny and how things are going with him.  I'm happy to report that things are going GREAT!  Let me try to answer your questions.

Q:  Are your kids still afraid of him?
A: Yes and no.  Not like they were when they thought it was a real person coming.  But they are afraid when he's coming and their things are still not put away.  Otherwise, they BEG for him to come.  They ask a few times a day about when Gunny is coming.

Q:  Do they think he is real?
A:  I think this is like the Muppets Complex.  Yes, they know he is not real.  But they also truly believe that he is.  So they talk to him and look him in the eye.  They hug him, hold his "hand", and wonder what he is doing.  Even though they can see me talking for him, they somehow believe he is still real.

Q:  How long does he keep their toys?
A:  For about a week.  I tell them he'll give them back when he's done with them.  But when they get them back, they have to put it away immediately or he'll eat it again.

Q:  Is it working?
A:  Like a charm.  Taryn isn't as motivated as Keara is, but we've now made it a part of our routine to get the house tidied every night.  And it works.  Taryn's main issue is that she gets distracted by the toys she is putting away.  Sometimes she can get the entire basement cleaned by herself.  But often she needs one of us to be with her.  So, as long as daddy or mommy is helping, the girls do an awesome job getting their things picked up.  They are in charge of their room, the living room, and the basement.  I make sure the other rooms are ready.

Q:  Do they have other chores?
A:  Yes, we have this chore chart for meals.  You know, set, clear, load, unload, and floors.  They have a chore for every meal, including clearing their own plates to the table.  They are awesome at that and it has really helped the atmosphere in our home.  I am no longer the only one doing the work and they are great helpers.  Again, Keara is a star helper.  Taryn needs a lot more help.  But she's doing great!

Just Another Day in Paradise

That's the song playing on Pandora right now and I was JUST thinking that today is the most perfect, beautiful day I have seen in years.  We had 80s and 90s up to the last day of August and then September came.  WHAM!  60s and 70s.  September has been my favorite month of the year for a long time but this one is proving to be perfect.  I love 60s and 70s.  And today is absolutely gorgeous.  Its supposed to get up to 68!

We opened up the doors and spent some time outside this morning.  I just worked in the garden and enjoyed every second of it.  Except removing my pumpkin plants.  They just didn't make it this year.  But my tomatoes are FINALLY red!  I've got to plan a meal that uses tomatoes now!

This weather makes me want to pull out all my autumn decor, sweaters, and Christmas music.  I want to make apple pie filling, pumpkin cookies and ginger cookies, oreo truffles, and especially caramel apples!!  I can't wait!  I LOVE this time of year!!!

Happy September!

Avery's Birthday in Pictures

Avery's birthday was AWESOME this year!!!  Well, not like it wasn't awesome last year, but it was definitely more fun this year.

There were so many great memories made that day. Like when Shaun and Nathan both won the "hot potato with Avery" game to determine who would help her blow out the candles. The music stopped with her perfectly held by both as they were passing from one to the other. Or when Jonathan asked if the beak on the cake was a cheeseburger. Or when Avery finally caught the cake and leaned over and licked it. Or when Shaun, when Susan awoke him off the couch to go home, asked in his delirious state, "Where's Brent? Did he go home?" Um...yeah, Brent (my other brother) is in Colorado.

First, we went to the pool, with cool slides that the girls loved, a fun kid area, a zipline, and diving board for the big boys.  It was awesome.  We got home around 7:20 to start dinner.  We ate about 8:30, after Nathan got back from Cross Country practice.  Around 9:30, we did games and cake, then presents.  Finally, the birthday girl was in bed a little after 10, exhausted.  We all were.

But it was SO fun and I'm so glad we got to do it with S&S and Co.  Thanks guys!

Happy birthday Goose!

Of course the cake had to be a Goose!

The Camera Fairy is At it Again!

Apparently, I need to keep better track of my camera.  I swore I'd keep it away from Nathan, and I'm failing.  Obviously, he's employed cohorts in crime since a couple were definitely not taken by him.  At the same time, I think its hilarious to find these random pics on my camera!  And I am appreciating those random moments pics that are actually precious.  Thanks for the entertainment Camera Fairy!

Mrs. McTwitter...

You know the poem...

"Mrs. McTwitter, the babysitter,
I think she's a little bit crazy.
She thinks the babysitter
is supposed to sit upon the baby."

-Shel Silverstein

Babysitters are the bane of my existence.  I mean, I was an awesome babysitter.  I loved doing it, I loved the kids, I played with them, fed them, bathed them, dressed them, put them to bed, cleaned up after them...the whole nine yards.

But now, being a parent hiring babysitters, I'm finding most of them are total duds.  I know a lot of my friends only care that their children are alive when they get home.  But I really do expect more than that.  If I'm going to pay these kids around minimum wage for their work, then they'd better do a good job.  If they got a real job and did a crummy job of it, they would not longer have a real job.  So I don't want to pay them for doing nothing, even if it meant just keeping my kids alive.  I expect more than that from them.

I expect them to take care of my kids and play with them.  Follow my instructions, including putting them in pajamas for bed.  I expect my kids to be in their room with the light off when I get home.  Sure, it'd be great if they were all asleep, but you can't force a kid to sleep.  So at least in their room, lights off, jammies on.  I expect that if you fed them dinner, clean up dinner.  If the kids made a mess, clean it up.  If I made the mess, I would LOVE it if you helped with that, but you don't HAVE to.  But if you made it, please, clean it up.  I expect you to play with my kids and not just plop them in front of a movie the whole time.  Especially not 3 movies.  And please don't let them consume 64 ounces of juice at dinner.  If I say no TV, please don't turn on the TV for them.  Please don't finish my Christmas presents for me.  Please don't spend the whole time on the phone.  Please don't call and ask, on your first time babysitting for me, if you can bring a friend.

That being said, if I come home and find the house a mess, dinner still on the table, and you on the computer or watching TV, I am going to reduce the amount I pay you.  And don't look at me like that when you count it in front of me only to find it is less that you hoped.  If you want to get paid for work, then actually work.

I know that's harsh, but after going thru dozens of babysitters and only finding 3 that are actually worth paying, I'm tired of searching for a great babysitter.  I love it when mom's train their kids.  When they really teach their daughters how to babysit.  I love those babysitters.  But the rest...??

How do you feel about babysitters?
