Help! The Young Women in our ward need a service project and they will be helping me get things ready for use in Primary for singing time, like visual aids, object lessons, musical instruments, games, and any thing else I can think of. The problem is, I need ideas. I want them to be really helpful and to not be done in 20 minutes, but I also don't want to waste time, money, and energy on things that aren't great.
So, I'm looking for ideas of games that are great for learning new songs, reviewing old songs, or singing favorite songs. Or visual aids to help teach words or review. Or other activities to get the kids engaged. Or great ways to make musical instruments or anything else that they can use during the music. Once a month, we have a special Sunday where we sing their favorite songs, play games with the music, and let them get really involved. But I need more ideas.
If you have any ideas to pass along (be specific), please let me know!

at midnight w/ hubby waiting upstairs to go to sleep, i can't think too much, so will help you brainstorm tomorrow on the phone; but in the meantime: check sugardoodle.net, and do you already have popsicle sticks with all the kids names so you can draw their names for volunteers/helpers/turns, with 2 different colors for junior or senior primary?
i know, lame comment, doesn't help you at all..sorry.
How about a fishing game with a decorated aquarium (or box) that you can use for the kids to choose a song or game or something? What are you doing in the primary?
Hi Cheri! Tiffany just gave me a link to your blog. Congrats on the beautiful kids and one on the way! I'm in primary too! Two things we have that are fun are #1: 2 stop signs with "go" written on the opposite side. A boy holds one and a girl holds the other and flip it as the song goes so the girls/boys have to start/stop and remember the words at any place in the song. #2: A large cube die made of cardboard. A different animal is on each face and when the die is rolled, they have to sing like that animal (i.e. hum, for humming bird. Loud for lion, etc.) That works great when you have to use repetition to learn a song. ALSO, our songleader has a plastic drum stick that she has kids come up and lead the music with along with her. They sing really well so they'll get picked to lead.

In our primary they use wind wands (sticks with lots of colorful ribbons on the end) and they have enough for all the kids to use. Then they follow the movements of the song leader. It's fun, but to be honest the kids don't really sing when they're holding them. They just pay attention to the movements. Ha!
What else? Puppets are really fun if they have time to make felt puppets (or something similar). Kids will absolutely sing well if there's a chance they'll get to come to the front and use a puppet.
Oh, or a flower pot or cone with a pop-up puppet inside (you know--that pushes up with a stick). Then you as the director control the puppet and say it will only come out if the kids are singing nice and loud or if they are singing reverently or if they are singing all the words, etc.
Pick a couple of the songs they are supposed to sing this year and I'm sure you can figure out a few visual aids for the young women to make that illustrate the song.
Good luck!
in my last ward, they would choose a child to go out the room, while another child would hide an object in the primary room, then let 1st child come back in, all the children had to sing louder as he gets closer to the hidden item, and quieter when he is moving away from the item. It really got them singing! good luck
