Anyone who has seen the Jungle Book or knows The Bear Necessities knows that the end of that line is "try to use the claw." Well, who knew that ol' Baloo was right?

Last night, my friend Jill and I picked a prickly pear...bare handed. Not a good idea. They are deceivingly covered in tiny baby fine prickles! I got a hundred in my fingers and spent the next hour picking them out. I guess I missed one, because now the skin has covered it and I have a very painful red bump.

So, the next time you go to pick a prickly pear, remember Baloo's advice...and take it.
